In einem Amsterdamer Hinterhaus versteckt sich die jüdische Familie Frank im Sommer 1942 vor den Nationalsozialisten. Hier schreibt Anne Frank ihr weltberühmtes Tagebuch, dem sie – wie einer besten Freundin – all ihre Beobachtungen, Gedanken und Gefühle anvertraut. In der Enge des Verstecks und isoliert von der Außenwelt schildert sie ihr Leben in ständiger Gefahr vor Entdeckung oder Bombenangriffen. Aber Anne erzählt auch davon, wie verwirrend es ist, erwachsen zu werden und von fast alltäglichen Familienstreitereien. Bis zum Schluss hofft sie auf ihre Rettung. Doch sie werden entdeckt. Anne Franks Familie wird in ein Konzentrationslager gebracht. Dort stirbt Anne kurz vor Kriegsende im Frühling 1945.
